Specialist tutoring and advisory service in the Havant area
Qualified and experienced dyslexia practitioner
Supporting pupils in literacy and numeracy

Kate Peters My interest is in providing the highest quality learning experience for your child, working in partnership with school and home.

With over twenty years of experience in primary special education, all my work has centred on pupils with specific learning needs. I have most recently completed a two year diploma course in supporting pupils of all ages with a range of learning needs. My private practice, on Hayling Island, has been established for some years and I combine this with work in local schools, aiding individual pupils, advising parents and training teaching staff in dyslexia-friendly practice.

Realising Your Child’s Potential

If you believe your child to be underachieving, it is important to pinpoint the cause as early as possible. For pupils with specific learning needs, this often means taking a different approach to learning rather than just offering more of the same.

Regular assessment is an important part of an accelerated learning process. Through informal assessment, I am able to address specific barriers and promote a positive learning experience. In following a tailored programme, your child experiences a sense of achievement and their motivation is boosted.

I draw on a lifetime’s work and training in the field, combined with the parenting of a dyslexic child, to create a learning environment that develops the essential thought patterns, skills and enjoyment necessary for your child to thrive.

One-to-one tuition

Tailored one-to-one tuition is a powerful way to bridge learning gaps and transform learning patterns. It provides:

What I offer

Services for schools

"There is a need to develop better access for schools, parents and children to the advice and skills of specialist dyslexia teachers, who can devise tailored interventions for children struggling most with literacy, whether or not they have been identified as having dyslexia".
An independent report from Sir Jim Rose to the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families June 2009, p.18

Spanning three decades of work in and around the field of education, I have been, Teacher-in-Charge of a Speech and Language (Dyslexia) Unit, SENCo, Southern Region Parenting Coordinator and an Extended Schools Consultant for Hampshire. The majority of my work has been school-based.

Having completed the wave of specialist teacher training following the Rose Review recommendations, I continue to support pupils, families and schools in creating dyslexia-friendly practices and devising individualised programmes of study.

My special interest lies in closing attainment gaps by devising effective interventions and personalised learning plans to accelerate progress for those falling behind their peers.

Testimonials

My daughter was diagnosed with significant dyslexia when she was 9 years old. At the time, albeit a difficult time to understand, my daughter found comfort in the fact that she did indeed have a difficulty that we could seek some help for.

Since being recommended to meet Kate Peters, my daughter and I have finally realised just what is actually possible!

After attending regular weekly tutor sessions with Kate, my daughter has been able to prove to herself that she is indeed capable of grasping all the necessary skills to survive the path of education and learning.

In a comparably short space of time, Kate has taught my daughter far more than I ever expected. Alongside the tremendous understanding she provided regarding the Dyslexia, Kate has a natural passion and sincerity which has shone through from the very first day.

Kate looks at the whole picture presented to her in the case. She takes account of the students specific strengths and weaknesses (both emotionally and practically) and is able to provide a focused path and strategy to create an individual, taylor-made plan.

Together with her support and teaching skills Kate has clearly demonstrated another of her invaluable qualities is the ability to deliver regular concise feedback to me, which enables me to fully understand my daughters progress and therefore I am able to continue the support at home.

I would gladly recommend Kate to any student wishing to gain a clearer understanding of their learning which will in turn give their confidence a healthy natural boost!

Nicola Fairchild - Hayling Island

Kate has been our savior in recognising our son’s potential, and she has managed to re-build his self-esteem despite him having pretty much given up on his Maths. All schools and pupils that are underachieving would benefit from Kate’s incredible expertise, and her calm, measured approach. Kate has an amazing insight and perspective on children’s individual learning needs, and has managed to ‘reach’ our son and help him make progress where previous interventions have not worked.

Kate has helped me so much. She has made me feel confident and I like Maths now. She’s just brilliant. Now I can do my Maths homework on my own!

Son age 9

Kate provides a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in which to learn; my daughter was struggling with the fundamentals of maths and Kate was able to identify and help her overcome the obstacles which were hindering her learning. After only a few sessions, my daughter made significant progress which resulted in a noticeable improvement in her performance at school.

Mrs Peters has worked with our daughter for over a year on a fortnightly/holiday basis. During this time E has steadily grown in confidence and dramatically improved in her abilities. She has closed the gap between herself and her classmates. She now happily uses her own techniques and strategies to answer questions, understanding that her learning style may be different - and that is a not a bad thing!

Mrs Peters is highly skilled in understanding the emotional side of learning. This is so evident in all her discussions and lessons. It is this unique understanding that I believe enables her to work so successfully in quickly building trust and confidence. By working with ourselves as parents and the school together, it has made such a difference for E. She has literally changed from a child believing she has a problem, at the bottom of the class, to one armed with a variety of skills and tricks up her sleeve looking forward to secondary school.
